Michael Caine and the late Glenda Jackson (in her final film role) are superb in the new film from Oliver Parker (The Best Marigold Hotel, Mamma Mia); a moving, nuanced drama based on the true story of a WWII veteran’s flight from his care home to the beaches of Normandy.

In the summer of 2014, on the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, Bernie Jordan (played by Caine) makes headlines after staging a ‘great escape’ from his home, crossing the channel and joining fellow war veterans in France to commemorate their fallen comrades – in doing so, embodying the defiant spirit of a generation.

Parker’s warm, bittersweet film celebrates an adventure that captured the imagination of the world and the culmination of Bernie’s 60-year marriage to Rene (Jackson), while also exploring the lasting trauma of war.

“Caine and Jackson and their ineffable class give this film real grit” ★★★★ The Guardian
