Dir: David Lean | UK | 1945 | 87 mins
Cast | Celia Johnson, Trevor Howard, Stanley Holloway, Cyril Raymond
Directed by David Lean, skillfully adapted from Noël Coward’s Still Life and quivering with pent-up emotion, Brief Encounter is one of the most powerfully romantic films of all time, capturing all the intensity and volatility of forbidden love.
Celia Johnson is Laura, a suburban housewife and mother who meets doctor Alec (Trevor Howard) by happenstance at a train station. As their acquaintance grows, so does their unexpected attraction, and they must choose whether to be together or apart. Shot in 1945 and released just months after the end of the war, beautifully shot and backed by a swooning Rachmaninoff score, Brief Encounter remains a timeless portrait of turbulent passion meeting middle-class restraint.
Please note that due to distribution, we are no longer able to offer a Captioned Screening on Tuesday 30th April at 5pm
