Shayda (a brilliant performance by Zar Amir Ebrahimi) flees her violent husband Hossein (Osamah Sami), taking her daughter Mona (Selina Zahednia) to a women’s shelter and filing for divorce. But she is still terrified that Hossein, who’s soon to finish his medical studies, will take Mona and return to Iran.

A powerful, tightly written and authentic drama about abuse and the possibility of new beginnings, Niasari’s tense, empathetic Shayda marks her out as an exciting new voice in Australian cinema.
