Port Talbot, 1942: Richard Jenkins (Lawtey) is a wayward schoolboy, caught between the pressures of his struggling family, a devastating war, and his own ambitions. But a new opportunity arises when his natural talent for drama is spotted by his teacher, Philip Burton (Jones). Taken under Philip’s wing, Richard thrives under his strict tutelage.
