An arresting, uplifting crowd-pleaser, Guan Hu’s (The Eight Hundred) desert noir won this year’s Cannes Un Certain Regard.

Northwest China, the edge of the Gobi Desert: Former stunt motorcyclist Lang (Eddie Peng) returns home after his release from prison. Working for the local stray dog patrol team to help clear the town before the 2008 Olympics, he strikes up an unlikely connection with a black dog. Two lonely souls together, they embark on a new journey. Featuring director Jia Zhangke, Tong Liya and Zhang Yi, Black Dog is an intimate drama with a striking, epic edge.

“Guan Hu's magnificently shot, moody and moving fable” Variety
