Mozart’s extended serenade, a symphony in all but name, contains a surprise package – the posthorn which suddenly appears in the sixth movement. The young Beethoven brought plenty of surprises to Vienna. His flair for the dramatic gesture and the unexpected marked him out as the composer who offered a challenge to convention and complacency. Stamford’s very own orchestra is conducted for the first time by Alexander Laing.
