Join our Youth Theatre This Autumn
Sunday, 05 September 2010 20:34

Stamford Youth Theatre provides children and young people with a wonderful foundation in theatre making and performing. In a fun and safe environment, areas covered in weekly workshops include improvisation, role play, character development, vocal technique, mime, movement, text and script work.

Thanks to fantastic guidance from Martin, there is always massive enthusiasm and commitment from all members, who are given the opportunity to present their work to audiences twice in the year. The end of term showcases in the ballroom in December (involving all members) and of course, the main production in the theatre in May.

With the aid of our talented production and design team, this show gives the young members the genuine experience of producing a large scale show in a working theatre equipped with lights, sound, set, costume, technical and full dress rehearsals. The show has a run of four performances and always to packed houses!

At the forefront of satellite broadcasts
Friday, 13 August 2010 09:13

We are delighted to announce the new, jam-packed season of live theatre, concerts, workshops and exhibitions for September to December 2010 and there really is something for everyone!

Kicking-off in August are the three sensational operas due to be broadcast from the Glyndebourne Festival; an absolute must for anyone who has always wanted to experience the infamous venue but not had the chance. Since the introduction of NT Live in 2009 (live theatre via satellite from the National Theatre), Stamford Arts Centre has been at the forefront for broadcasting shows of national significance to a local audience in Lincolnshire. Also in August, 'Impossible Things Before Breakfast' will be screened live from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Traverse Live! as well as two further NT Live productions 'A Disappearing Number' in October and 'Hamlet' in December.

And if that’s not enough, Stephen Fry in Fry Live! from the Royal Festival Hall will be screened on Sunday 19 September in a special event to mark the publication of his new volume of autobiography: Fry – A Memoir. You cannot afford to miss this if you are a fan!

Typical comments from Stamford satellite theatre audiences include:

It was wonderful to imagine the millions of people round the world sharing the experience with me.

Enjoyed being able to see the play on screen - wouldn't have seen it otherwise!

It was very good, felt one was really there in the theatre

NEW - LIVE from the Glyndebourne Festival
Wednesday, 07 July 2010 19:59

The Rake’s Progress by Igor Stravinsky

Screened LIVE from the Glyndebourne Festival

Sat 21 Aug. 6.30pm

£15 (£13)

Glyndebourne has become synonymous with The Rake’s Progress thanks to John Cox’s 1975 production which was framed within David Hockney’s delightful post-Hogarthian cross-hatched designs. With John Cox and David Hockney returning to recreate their acclaimed production, it will be conducted for the first time by Glyndebourne’s current Music Director Vladimir Jurowski.

Billy Budd by Benjamin Britten

Tues 24 Aug. 6.30pm

£13 (£11)

Michael Grandage, Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse, made his long-awaited operatic debut directing Benjamin Britten’s Billy Budd at Glyndebourne with summer, to widespread critical acclaim. Sir Mark Elder conducted this opera for the first time, marking his 100th operatic production in his illustrious musical career.

"I was enthralled beyond my wildest hopes by this stupendous achievement, and scarcely know where to begin lavishing praise. If there are any tickets for the remaining performance, i can only urge every serious opera-lover to go to murderous lengths to acquire them" The Daily Telegraph

Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck

Thurs 26 Aug. 6.30pm

£13 (£11)

With its familiar fairy-tale story, feel-good ending and magical mix of simple folk tunes and rich Wagnerian textures, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel has long cast its musical spell over both adults and children. This deliciously witty production sees the broom-maker’s two outcast children lose their way in the enchanted forest before finding themselves in every hungry child’s dream.

“This poetic, witty and imaginative modernising of Hansel and Gretel gives fresh validity to Humperdinck’s adorable masterpiece” The Daily Telegraph
